Why Is It Called Skunk Works?
Lockheed’s Skunk Works division was founded during WWII to create America’s first jet fighter. Its nickname, “Skunk Works,” borrowed from a popular comic strip, became an enduring symbol of innovation, secrecy, and advanced engineering. With that mission in mind, Skunk Works partnered with the Top Gun Maverick production team to design the futuristic DARKSTAR aircraft for the newly released film.
