An interface between air and glass, such as for a lens or window, reflects some of the light which falls on it. It is almost always desirable to minimize this loss of light and stray or ghost reflections with an antireflection (AR) coating on such a surface. The complexity of an AR coating depends on its spectral bandwidth and to what degree the reflections must be reduced. A narrow-bandwidth AR coating for a laser might need only two layers, but a demanding AR for the broad visible spectrum might need 8 or more layers. This webinar will review the basic principles underlying AR coatings from various points of view, and show how they are designed and produced.
